Dynamic Positioning (DP) is the technology that enables a marine platform to automatically maintain its position and heading. In situations where anchoring is impractical — in deep water, during precision operations, or on continuously moving missions — DP systems play a decisive role.
Basic Working Principle
A DP system collects real-time data from multiple sources including GPS, acoustic positioning, wind sensors, and gyroscopes. This data is fed to a central control unit, which then sends the required force and torque values to the vessel's thruster systems. As a result, the system continuously compensates for external disturbances (current, wind, waves) and maintains the vessel's position.
This process functions like an "invisible anchor": the platform is held in place entirely by motor power, without any physical connection.
Areas of Application
DP systems are most widely used on drilling platforms and support vessels. They are also fitted to cable-laying ships, research and scientific vessels, offshore wind turbine installation vessels, and certain military classes. On autonomous marine vehicles, DP functionality is integrated as a software layer within the navigation control algorithm.
Why Does an Indigenous Solution Matter?
DP systems have traditionally been manufactured by a handful of foreign companies and sold at high licensing costs. This represents both economic and strategic dependence for operators. The development of an indigenous DP solution provides critical independence in terms of supply security, maintenance flexibility, and long-term technology capability.
In the specific context of Türkiye, with its active offshore energy operations and expanding marine research capacity, the need for domestic DP technology is growing each year.
The Relationship Between DP and Autonomous Systems
On the path to fully autonomous ship operations, DP is one of the fundamental building blocks. Without reliable station-keeping capability, autonomous mission planning cannot be performed reliably. Every advance in DP technology therefore directly contributes to the development of autonomous marine systems.
